The original custodians of this land were the Native Americans who were referred to as the “Shasta” peoples. Prior to contact with European descendants, the term “Shasta” wasn't used by the Shastan peoples themselves. The natives here referred to themselves as the “Ka’hosadi," or "plain speakers.”
